GBG recently communicated that the Home Office were wishing to reduce the fees payable to the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) for a basic, standard, or enhanced criminal records certificate as follows:
The fee for the Update Service will remain the same, at £13 per year.
DBS Standard and enhanced volunteer application fees will remain free-of-charge.
GBG Administration Fee charges remain unchanged.
This amendment has now been confirmed by DBS. Read more here: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/fee-changes-for-dbs-checks.
Context behind the Amendment
The DBS is a non-departmental public body. The DBS administers the processes that implement the criminal records disclosure system and issue certificates either confirming that the individual has no convictions and is of no other interest to police, or detailing relevant criminal record information about the individual.
Since the fees payable were last amended, the DBS has modernised its technology system, securing efficiencies of scale. This change has facilitated higher than forecast volumes of applications being received and processed. Therefore, fees need to be amended to ensure that the cost savings are reflected in the fees, and individuals are not being overcharged for services received.
The Fees are being reduced to ensure that the principles in Managing Public Money are adhered to.
This instrument reduces fees for basic, standard, and enhanced DBS checks, where the fee is payable. There is no change to the fee for the update service.
What do you need to do next?
GBG see this news as very positive for our customers and their associated individuals, which are required to undertake a criminal record check, as it reduces fees associated with securing work/voluntary positions where a criminal record check is required or requested.
You don’t need to do anything. GBG have been preparing for these changes and will be amending fees in our systems, processes and documents in line with the 1st October 2019 deadline.
